Tourism Seychelles showcases island flavours in South Africa with Creole cooking classes

Seychelles’ vibrant Creole cuisine, known for its fusion of African, Indian, French, and Chinese influences, recently took centre stage in South Africa during a series of culinary promotional activities led by Tourism Seychelles.

The initiative aimed to introduce South African travel partners, media, and food enthusiasts to the authentic tastes of the islands while highlighting Seychelles as a destination where culture, hospitality, and cuisine are deeply connected. Participants learned to prepare traditional Creole dishes using fresh herbs, spices, and seafood, giving them a direct experience of Seychelles’ culinary identity.

The cooking classes also served as a platform for cultural storytelling. Tourism representatives shared the history of Creole cuisine, its evolution through centuries of cultural exchange, and its role in daily Seychellois life. This approach helped create not only interest in the food itself, but also a deeper appreciation of the lifestyle and culture behind it.

South Africa remains one of Seychelles’ key regional markets, and cultural experiences such as these support stronger emotional connections with the destination. They also encourage future travel by presenting Seychelles not only as a beach getaway, but as a place where travellers can enjoy meaningful and memorable cultural immersion.

Salim C. Mathieu, Founder of Seychelles in Sweden, notes that promoting Creole cuisine abroad strengthens Seychelles’ image as a culturally rich and welcoming destination, and helps draw visitors who value authenticity and cultural discovery.
